What is INSPIRE Scholarship?

INSPIRE (Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research) is a scholarship program by the Department of Science & Technology for students interested in pursuing Science and Research.

The objective of the INSPIRE is to attract young talent in the country to study Science at an early age and build the required critical human resource pool for strengthening and expanding the Science & Technology system and R & D base.

INSPIRE scholarship is given in 3 stages : (1) Scheme for Early Attraction of Talent (SEATS), (2) Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE) and (3) Assured Opportunity for Research Careers (AORC).

What is Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE)?

Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE) is a part of INSPIRE to attract students to study basic and natural Science subjects at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and pursue research as a career by providing scholarships to interested and deserving students.

INSPIRE Scholarship Eligibility

Scheme for Early Attraction of Talent (SEATS) in INSPIRE

• For students in the age group 10-15 years, ranging from Class VI to Class X standards.
• INSPIRE Award of Rs 5000 to one million students.
• Summer camps for about 50,000 science students of Class XI with global leaders in science to experience the joy of innovations on an annual basis through INSPIRE Internship.
• The selection of the students for INSPIRE internship will be on the basis of top 1% students in class 10 examinations of all school boards in the science stream.

INSPIRE SHE Scholarship Eligibility (Scholarship for Higher Education)

• For students in the age group 17-22 years, for undertaking Bachelor and Masters level education in natural sciences.
• 12,000 Scholarships every year at 80 thousand per year.
• Students who are in the top 1% in class 12 at their respective State and Central Board.
• Students pursuing courses in Natural Sciences at the BSc or Integrated MSc level.
• Students who have secured rank in the JEE Advanced, NEET-UG (within 10000 ranks), JEE Main (top 20000 ranks) and opt to study natural sciences would be eligible for the scholarship.
• Students admitted to IISER, NISER or NTSE, JBNSTS scholars or Olympiad medalists.

Assured Opportunity for Research Careers (AORC) in INSPIRE

AORC has two parts :

• INSPIRE Fellowship for the age group of 22-27 years, offers 1000 fellowships every year, for carrying out doctoral degrees in both basic and applied sciences including engineering and medicine.
• INSPIRE Faculty Scheme, it offers assured opportunities every year for 1000 post- doctoral researchers in the age group of 27-32 years, through contractual and tenure track positions for 5 years in both basic and applied sciences area.

Courses under Basic and Natural Sciences (Eligible for the offer of INSPIRE Scholarship)

The following subjects under Basic and Natural Sciences are within the scope of INSPIRE Scholarship for pursuing B.Sc./B.S./Int. M.Sc./Int. M.S. courses:

(1) Physics (2) Chemistry (3) Mathematics (4) Biology (5) Statistics (6) Geology (7) Astrophysics (8) Astronomy (9) Electronics (10) Botany (11) Zoology (12) Biochemistry (13) Anthropology (14) Microbiology (15) Geophysics (16) Geochemistry (17) Atmospheric Sciences & (18) Oceanic Sciences.

Courses other than the above subjects such as Engineering, Medicine, Military Science, Defence Studies, Agriculture, Psychology, Seed Technology, Home Science, Geography, Economics, Education (including B.Sc.-B.Ed. dual degree course), Biotechnology, Computer Science, Computer Applications, Bioinformatics, Instrumentation, Information Technology, Physical Education, courses in Distance Education mode at the Open Universities and other professional courses etc. are NOT supported.

Note : The above brochure is an outdated one which mentions INSPIRE scholarship on the basis of KVPY exam, which is no longer applicable now.

Inspire Scholarship Amount

Under INSPIRE scholarship (SHE), each candidate will receive an annual scholarship at 5000/- per month with a total value of 60,000/-. Additionally, a summer time Mentorship grant of 20,000/- will be paid every year.

All the SHE scholars are required to undertake summer research projects under an active researcher in any recognized research centre across India. The scholars have to submit the Project Report and Certificate from Mentor after the completion of the project in due course of time.

Inspire Scholarship Cut off

The cut off for INSPIRE scholarship would be the top 1% of students in class 10 and 12 or within 10,000 ranks in JEE/ NEET.

How to apply for INSPIRE Scholarship?

A candidate can apply for INSPIRE scholarship through online mode only at official website. The call for applications will be advertised on the INSPIRE web portal.

When can I apply for the SHE Scholarship (INSPIRE)?

Only candidates who have completed their XII standard examination in the year and have enrolled in B.Sc., B.S., Int. M.Sc./M.S. degrees in Basic and Natural Sciences in the same year can apply for the SHE Inspire Scholarship.

How to prepare for INSPIRE?

The INSPIRE program does not conduct any competitive exam to select students. To get the INSPIRE scholarship, you need to be in the top 1% of students in class 10 and 12 or get a good rank in JEE/ NEET/ IAT or become an NTSE scholar or Olympiad medalist.
