KVPY 2016 Examination

What is KVPY?

Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) is a scholarship program funded by the Department of Science and Technology of the Government of India, to attract exceptionally highly motivated students for pursuing basic science courses and research career in science.

Students who will clear KVPY written exam and interview will be eligible for direct admission in top institutes like IISc and the various IISERs.

The objective of the KVPY scholarship program is to identify students with talent and aptitude for research; help them realize their academic potential; encourage them to take up research careers in Science, and ensure the growth of the best scientific minds for research and development in the country.

Online application to apply for KVPY 2016 will be available from : 18th July 2016

KVPY 2016-17 Cut Offs and Results

KVPY 2016 written examination results are likely to be declared in the month of December. Last year, the results were announced on December 21, 2015. This year, KVPY exam was conducted in online mode only, so we can expect early KVPY results.

KVPY 2016-17 Interview Dates

KVPY 2016-17 interviews will start from January 2017. Students who clear KVPY 2016 written examination will be informed about KVPY interview schedule after the KVPY results.

KVPY 2016 Examination Details

KVPY 2016 examination will be conducted in online mode only.

KVPY 2016 application form will be submitted online only on KVPY website. Last date for filling KVPY 2016 application form is August 30, 2016.

KVPY 2016 examination date is 6th November 2016. You can download the admit card for KVPY 2016 from the second week of October 2016.

KVPY 2016 Syllabus

Since KVPY written examination is an aptitude test, there is no prescribed syllabus for the exam. The objective of written exam (only in online mode from 2016) is to test the understanding and analytical ability of the student. Students are tested for the syllabus up to class X / XII / 1st year of B.Sc. / B.S. / B.Stat. / B.Math. / Int. M.Sc. / M.S. as applicable.

KVPY 2016 Selection Procedure

KVPY is administered by the Indian Institute of Science. Selection of the students in KVPY is made from those studying in XI standard to 1st year of any undergraduate Program in Basic Sciences namely B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./M.S. in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology having aptitude for scientific research.

IISc will conduct an aptitude test for KVPY 2016 at various centres in the country to screen applications. Based on the performance in the aptitude test, short-listed students are called for an interview which is the final stage of the selection procedure.

For receiving a KVPY scholarship or fellowship, both aptitude test and interview marks are considered.

The merit list is based on 75% weightage for Aptitude Test marks and 25% weightage for the interview marks in the streams SA, SB and SX.

What are SA, SB and SX in KVPY?

Since students from Class XI, Class XII and first year students in undergraduate program in Basic Sciences are eligible to apply for KVPY, the examination is divided into three streams:

  • Stream SA have students who are in class XI Standard during the academic year in which KVPY is conducted. They have to give SA Test.
  • Stream SX have students who are in class XII Standard during the academic year in which KVPY is conducted. They have to give SX/SB Test.
  • Stream SB have students who are in 1st year of undergraduate program in Basic Sciences during the academic year in which KVPY is conducted. They have to give SX/SB Test.

KVPY 2016 Eligibility Criteria

The KVPY Fellowships are given to Indian Nationals only to Study in India (Students holding PIO, OCI Card and students intending to pursue/pursuing undergraduate program under Distance Education scheme/correspondence course of any university are not eligible to apply).

KVPY Eligibility for Stream SA Students:
1) Students enrolled in XI Standard (Science Subjects) during the academic year in which KVPY is conducted.
2) Must have secured a minimum of 80% (70% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in MATHEMATICS and SCIENCE subjects in the X Standard Board examination.
3) Must have secured a minimum of 60% (50%for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in Science subjects in the XII standard/(+2) Board Examination.
4) Should join an undergraduate course in Basic Sciences (B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./M.S.) after class XIIth.

KVPY Eligibility for Stream SX Students:
1) Students enrolled in XII Standard (Science Subjects) during the academic year in which KVPY is conducted.
2) Must have secured a minimum of 80% (70% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in MATHEMATICS and SCIENCE subjects in the X Standard Board examination.
3) Must have secured a minimum of 60% (50%for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in Science subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in the XII standard Board Examination.
4) Should join an undergraduate course in Basic Sciences (B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./M.S.) after class XIIth.

KVPY Eligibility for Stream SB Students:
1) Students enrolled in the 1st year of undergraduate program in Basic Sciences namely Physics/Chemistry/Mathematics & Biology leading to B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./M.S. during the academic year in which KVPY is conducted.
3) Must have secured a minimum of 60% (50%for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in Science subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology/Mathematics) in the XII Standard Board Examination.
4) Must secure 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in the 1st year final examination of B.Sc./B.S./B.Math./B.Stat./Int. M.Sc./M.S. before taking up the fellowship, if awarded.

Which undergraduate courses in Basic Sciences are eligible for KVPY 2016 Scholarship?

Students enrolled in an undergraduate course in Basic Sciences, that is, B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./M.S. in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Cell Biology, Ecology, Molecular Biology, Botany, Zoology, Physiology, Biotechnology, Neurosciences, Bioinformatics, Marine Biology, Geology, Human Biology, Genetics, Biomedical Sciences, Applied Physics, Geophysics, Materials Science or Environmental Science.

Scholarship Rewards under KVPY Scheme

The students who qualify KVPY Exam are eligible for the fellowship. The students receive fellowship from 1st year onwards of their graduation. The KVPY fellows receive Rs. 5000 monthly fellowship from 1st to 3rd year of B.Sc/ B.Stat/ B.S./ B.Maths/ Integrated M.S./M.Sc and an annual contingency grant of Rs.20,000. After three years the fellowship is enhanced to Rs.7,000 per month during M.Sc/ 4th & 5th year of Integrated M.S./M.Sc and an annual contingency grant of Rs. 28,000.
